When learning to crochet the first thing you learn is single crochet, then double crochet. The first things you usually make are scarves or blankets. The most fun thing to learn and crochet are - Granny Squares!!

This is the first blanket I made with the granny squares - the traditional every round a different color, each square different from the other and edged in black. A real beauty but labor intensive.

Another version of the traditional granny - each round a separate color but all the squares are the same.

Still takes a lot of time but since the squares are all the same, you can do them assembly style. I made this one for a friend to match her living room. Turned out very nice!

Even simpler granny square - the square is all one color. In addition on this blanket I did the squares to make a pattern - unfortunately after a computer crash I only have this small picture.

This type of square is not as labor intensive as the squares where each round changes color so it is easier to get done in a timely manner. This one I also used a zig zag chain stitch to hook the squares together which was quite fun and gave the blanket a unique look.

Granny squares can be decorative too! This type of square might look like a flower, spirals, half one color and half another and more - your imagination is the limit. These can be time consuming as well but looks so beautiful!

Then sometimes you don't want to spend the time on 100 small squares and instead make one large square!! Made in the granny square pattern but continued until the size of the bed (don't forget it will be square not rectangle), this style of blanket can get a bit bulky towards the end but looks great when done. You can do a simple pattern like this or more complicated (look below).

Solid colored, color change every other row, occassional color changes, fun shapes or a crazy repeating color change - there is a granny for every person! Find your favorite today!

Hope you let your creativity flow and make your own granny square - small or large, one color or 100 - do what makes you happy!
Thanks for reading!

I really need to try crocheting again. I tried it when I was younger and I did It way too tight. You have created some wonderful granny squares. Thanks for sharing them with SYC.
hugs,
Jann

I started out too tight as well. It took conscious effort to make myself loosen up, sometimes I still find myself holding too tight.
